This upcoming season brings five nationally celebrated works to Columbus. These are stories that are shaping the national theatre conversation, produced right here by Columbus-based artists and theatre professionals. That distinction matters. The Contemporary is not a touring house or a stop on a national circuit. It is a producing theatre, meaning these shows are cast, rehearsed, designed, and brought to life by local people, specifically for our community, while meeting the highest professional standards.
Securing the rights to these productions is no small feat. Many of the plays and musicals in this season have only recently premiered on Broadway or received major national recognition. Rights are granted selectively to theatres with a proven artistic track record. That The Contemporary can bring these works to Columbus speaks to its standing in the national theatre landscape. And ensures local audiences get timely access to stories shaping conversations across the country.

The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio Season Opens
The season opens with Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill: The Musical (September 17–October 4, 2026). This is a Tony Award–winning powerhouse that pulls back the curtain on a seemingly perfect family as buried truths come roaring to the surface. Raw, emotionally charged, and unforgettable, it sets the tone for a season unafraid to ask big questions.
Next is Jonathan Spector’s Eureka Day (November 7–22, 2026). This is a sharp, laugh-out-loud comedy that turns a progressive school community upside down when a health crisis forces leaders to confront what happens when no one agrees on the truth. Smart, timely, and wildly entertaining, it feels pulled straight from our current moment.
The holiday season brings back a favorite, A Christmas Carol (December 11–20, 2026). This intimate, one-actor adaptation has become a beloved Columbus tradition. It is important to note that A Christmas Carol is not included in the season subscription. But it can be added on separately for those who want to make it part of their holiday plans.
Looking Ahead to 2027
In early 2027 comes Kimberly Belflower’s John Proctor Is the Villain (February 27–March 14, 2027). This is one of the most talked-about new American plays of recent years. Set in a high school English classroom, it follows young women challenging the stories they have been taught, with urgency, humor, and heart.
The season concludes with Where the Mountain Meets the Sea (May 1–16, 2027). This is a tender, music-filled journey exploring family, memory, and legacy through lyrical storytelling and live folk music.
