In this episode, we dive deep into the intricacies of the dark web, cybersecurity, and ways to protect yourself online.

To start, our special guests, Mason Landrum and Alex West from Nice Guy Technology, share some valuable insights on how to stay safe in the ever-evolving digital landscape. They highlight the National Cybersecurity Alliance as an excellent resource for cybersecurity information and resources. From informative videos and webinars to providing speakers for educational sessions, the NCA has great information.

Not only that, but they also discuss the importance of reporting cybercrime incidents to your local attorney general. By reporting incidents, we contribute to tracking and preventing cybercrime effectively. Remember, government agencies and individuals tracking cybercrime can only work with the information that is reported. So let’s not underestimate the significance of reporting any suspicious activities.

Create A Safe Code For Family Members

Speaking of safety, Mason and Alex stress the importance of having a code word to ensure one’s security. This code word strategy is for older adults and is also useful for children who are increasingly using smartphones. They share a story about an older adult who unknowingly shared personal information with a potential stranger simply because they couldn’t hear well on the phone. Let’s learn from this story and be proactive in protecting ourselves and our loved ones.

Moreover, Alex and Mason bring up the proactive steps we can take to prevent being hacked, such as staying cautious about phishing attempts and using trusted email providers like Apple, Gmail, or Microsoft. While they encounter clients with different email providers, it’s crucial to prioritize security features and perhaps consider paid options for additional spam protection.

Social Media Impersonations and Your Digital Identity

During the episode, we also discuss the dangers lurking on social media, including smishing and impersonation scams. They both advise reaching out to the person through normal communication channels to verify any suspicious offers received. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Now, our most eye-opening and intriguing discussion revolves around the dark web and digital identity. We explore the illegal activities occurring there, from the sale of military weapons to engaging in human trafficking. While we can’t be 100% secure when using internet-based services, understanding the dark web and its vulnerabilities can help us better protect ourselves.

Password Security

Lastly, let’s remember the importance of password security. In this episode, we emphasize the significance of creating strong, unique, and fun passwords. They act as the first line of defense against cyber threats.
