We welcome Rodney Dunigan, Managing Editor and Weekend Anchor for WSYX/ABC Channel 6 and Fox28 in Columbus to talk more about news coverage in a 24/7 media cycle.

The role of media and of reporters has dramatically changed in recent years. It is likely more difficult with a 24/7 news cycle. Rodney talks about how he sees his role today in providing information to the public, compared to when he began his career in the news.

“Unbiased coverage” has become a touchpoint for many. But is also seen as a “tag line,” not necessarily reality. How does he maintain his neutrality in his reporting? What steps does he take to ensure his story is as complete as possible?

Changes in the industry also changed the methods/processes he follows in researching news stories. Rodney talks about the challenges he faces to be sure the story is complete, as well as interesting, for your viewers.

News coverage is a tough business, yet many young professionals are ready to take their chances with careers in the media. What advice doe he have for young journalists?

Rodney and his family are “in the spotlight” constantly! Not only is he in a public role, but also his wife. How do they create and maintain a bubble of anonymity and protection around their family?

We were surprised, but happy to be “on camera” as Rodney brought a video cameraman along to record our podcast session –
