We welcome back Kelly Fuller, the Vice President of Talent and Workforce Development at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. The episode delves into the challenges and opportunities in the Central Ohio region related to workforce development, multigenerational workplaces, and the impact of the pandemic on employment and education.

One of the key topics discussed is the strategy developed by a third-generation owner of a small manufacturing company in Northwest Ohio to address the struggle in hiring young workers for good-paying factory jobs. They employ retired workers part-time to mentor and train younger workers. This creates a multigenerational workplace that facilitates knowledge transfer and skill development. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data on the increasing number of older adults needing part-time work and flexibility further highlights the significance of multigenerational workplaces and the evolving nature of employment trends.

Workforce employer-employee engagement

The podcast also sheds light on the efforts of employers to engage with and support refugee and immigrant communities to address workforce shortages. Companies such as AmerisourceBergen in Lockbourne have successfully built relationships with refugee and immigrant communities. Doing this by adapting their marketing materials, adjusting work schedules, and accommodating cultural preferences to attract diverse candidates. Tarako Human Resource Association of Central Ohio, Jewish Family Services, CRIS, and Riverview International provide resources to assist employers in engaging and supporting refugee and immigrant communities.

There is availability of low-cost or no-cost training programs for job seekers, including upskilling and specific skills training. Organizations such as the Ohio Technical Centers, Columbus Metropolitan Library, and Ohio Small Business Development Centers offer various programs and services. These support individuals in pursuing employment opportunities or starting their own businesses. Additionally, the podcast highlights the growth of industries like STEM and STEAM in the Central Ohio region. And with companies such as Intel, Honda, Amgen, and Pharmavite expanding in the area, we will start to see diverse employment prospects.

COVID still has an impact on the workforce and education

The impact of the pandemic on education and employment is a significant focus of the episode. Kelly discusses the transition to virtual learning in K-12 schools. This highlights concerns about learning loss and the lack of social skills among students. Carol brings attention to the closure of part-time jobs, mentoring, and internship opportunities for high school juniors and seniors due to the pandemic. The episode underscores the importance of addressing these challenges and adapting policies to create opportunities for underrepresented talent pipelines. We note the example of JPMorgan Chase’s program for individuals with criminal backgrounds as an example.

There is an impact of an aging population, declining birth rates, and various socio-economic factors on the labor market in Central Ohio. Unemployment rates under 4% combined with talent shortages present challenges for employers. Coordination and support across multiple sectors are essential in addressing these challenges. This will ensure the success of businesses in attracting, retaining, and developing talent.

The future is bright

Fuller expresses optimism about the future of Central Ohio and highlights the abundant opportunities, particularly in STEM-related fields. She encourages listeners to stay engaged and look forward to positive developments in Ohio.
